When England Take On USA

I cannot work I cannot play
I cannot find the words to say
I have no strength to pump my bike
and people ask me what I'm like
it's Lib-Dem-Cons against Obama
the Great Escape the Barmy Army
my partner says it's just a game
I cannot find a soul to blame
and watch the seconds tick away
'til England take on USA

it's more important than my cat
my shed my cottage and my hat
thank god my partner understands
and hasn't left for foreign lands
but that is where i long to be
to Africa oh please transport me
my work my poems and my wife
oh England you've hijacked my life
I'm nervous in an eerie way
and all because of USA

oh USA oh USA
I'm so not having a nice day
we've taken all the things you say
repeating them in our own way
like sheep we copy ev'ry phrase
we're getting larger by the day
your fast food jargon-twisting words
well you can feed them to the birds
I'm confident but I'm not sure
unlike the flag-decked house next door
my  voice and pen will fade away
before we take on USA

when England take on USA
there will not be a redder eye
in sixty-six  I danced around
the busy streets of London town
I've waited now for all these years
Oh do not let it end in tears
I wonder if I'll feel as proud
before some big screen pub in Stroud
I'll glue my ears up to Five Live
to keep that faith and dream alive
and text the world to comfort me
if I'm away from my TV
St George's Cross will fly that day
When England take on USA
