Message from an 'Inversely Reformed Character'

'Who do you want to win, Dad?'
Our Nicky once asked me.
'The team that deserves to,' I replied,
'So let's just wait and see.

As long as it's worth watching
And played in a good spirit,
I hope the side that wins the game
Deserves to do on merit.'

BUT

That was a few years ago
When I was less emotional,
And previous to my becoming
More and more devotional,

For, nowadays, I'm surely in
A blue and white striped cult:
Do I give a fig for football?
No ... just want a good result

Very boring one-nil wins
Will nicely do for me.
At this stage of the season
They'll fill my heart with glee.

SO

Bore me stiff, Town, 'doze me off';
You'll still make this fan's tail wag
If, by four forty-five this afternoon,
You've put three points in the bag.
